A day at UNIS

The University Centre in Svalbard (UNIS) is the world’s northernmost higher education institution, located in Longyearbyen at 78º N. They provide research-based education of the next generation of Arctic experts in biology, geology, geophysics and technology. About 300 people from all over the world study at UNIS and many activities take place in the field.

2/3 of the archipelago Svalbard is covered with ice... that's why it's so important to know how to get out of it in case something happens. The threats in the Arctic have many different names. The biggest of them is human stupidity, but other than that are: polar bears, avalanches, frostbites, ice cracks, etc. Therefore, besides writing a doctorates dissertation about microplastics in the oceans, safety training is compulsory for everyone.

I had the pleasure to be on one of the safety classes for the Arctic Nature Guide students. This time they learned what to do when the Arctic Sea will part under their feet. The polar night and minus degrees don't help in such a stressful situation. It is really important to know what to do and how. When you are wet and cold in the Arctic, time can be your best friend or your worst enemy.
